If you liked Cannon Fodder on the Amiga, you’ll feel right at home with Freeverse’s new arcade shooter; Warpack Grunts. While not as tactically challenging and deep as old Cannon Fodder, Grunts serves cartoon violence in spades in a fun whimsical manner that most people can enjoy. You maneuver your squad of elite soldiers through jungles & swamps, killing enemies and taking objectives. The graphics and the ambience of the game looks and feels great and the 40 levels that comes with Grunts should keep you gunning down enemies in the swamps for some time. At only $0.99 this lightweight shooter is easily this weeks top pick.
I don’t know if it’s the completely simple retro shapes or the electronic ambience of Eliss that makes it a classic, nevertheless this game has something different to offer. This highly stylized puzzle takes place in outer space. By splitting or joining “stars” you manipulate the game area, filling up supernovas with matter until they disperse and you clear the sector. Eliss truly utilizes the platforms multitouch gestures into a unique gaming experience. The worldwide praise isn’t unjust; if you like puzzles it’s a must try for the platform.
Craneball Studios new aviator adventure floats right in on this weeks feature spot. In this quirky game you pilot your blimp through puzzling maps, picking up travelers & destroying enemy blimps. The controls is charmingly intuitive, with a thrust-by-the-touch & Steer-by-the-tilt mechanism. What really makes this game over the top, is it’s breathtakingly awesome graphics and it’s cool ambient music. The levels are well put together with an increasing climb in difficulty & novelty. This game is generally just a pleasant, out of the ordinary experience for a rather attractive introductionary price.
While there are many good releases this week, we have to stand back in awe for the sheer technical provess of Firemint’s Real Racing. While im afraid the price will scare many casual gamers away, this racing game is just drop dead gorgeous. With 36 cars and 57 career events to complete the content is massive. The stearing is alot of fun, and the game feels like a real racing. To top it off you race along to 10 licenced music tracks from indy artists. Oh, and did i mention online cloudcell ranking system? All in all, this game promises hours of fun. If you have a few bucks to spare it’s completely worth it.
Isotope is a retro themed spaceshooter akin to “Geometry Wars”. This blazingly funky game wrapped in neon showers, promises a wealth of content mixed with RPG elements and a very extensive store-upgrade system. A few minutes of gameplay and you’ll understand what the fuss is about; You’ll blast swarms of enemies with a selection of funky spaceships to the beating tunes of electronic music.
